Henry James was orphaned when he was 11 or 12. He was taken in by a store keeper in Washington, D.C. and later attended George Washington, D.C. and earned a degree in veterinary medicine.

Phyllis Kernick (nee Taylor) writes:
"James was "quite a guy" based on the fact that he was orphaned at so young an age, put himself through George Washington University veterinary college working for the U.S. mint. He was one mellow fellow and I was privileged to know him."
