John STEPHENS

John and his family arrived in Sydney, Australia aboard the "Andromache" on 31 Jan 1839 brought out by Capt Flint.

At the time of his agreeing to emigrate on 17 Sep 1838 John is described as a farm labourer aged 32 years, able to read and write, a protestant, his native place was Falmouth, England; his father is given as John A Stephens, farmer near Helston, his mother as Loveday Treloar.

Maria Stephens is recorded (on 21st January 1839) as being 26 years of age and living at home. She was capable of reading, was a Methodist and her native place was given as St Keverne, near Helston. Her father is William Jeffery (a farmer of St Keverne) and her mother is Elizabeth Leggett.

Their two children also went with them to Australia. Joseph was aged 5 on 9th March 1838 and had been baptised on 9th March 1834 by Edward Rogers, Vicar. Jane was aged 7 on 9th March 1838 and had been baptised on 9th March 1834 by Edward Rogers, Vicar.

Upon arrival the immigration papers recorded that all four had survived the journey and that John had brought a testimonial with him from Edward Rogers, the vicar of Constantine & William Mayn (sic) which testified John's character as "Good" and the state of bodily health, strength and possible usefulness as "Very Good".

Upon arrival the immigration papers recorded that the state of Maria's bodily health, strength and possible usefulness as "Very Good". She is also listed as Methodist and able to read.

Maria was attended by Dr King 10 days before her death at the age of 71. The informant of her death was her son-in-law G D Du Ross. Her death certificate records that she had spent 50 years in New South Wales, having married in England at the age of 16 to John Stephens. Her children were recorded as 3 males, 5 females living - 9 deceased.


Jane STEPHENS

Jane emigrated to Australia with her parents when just 7 years old.


John STEPHENS

John emigrated to Australia with his parents when just 5 years old.


William STEPHENS

In the 1851 census in Wendron, Village of Manhay 20 were:
* Bennet Stephens, head, married, 31, farmer of 23 acres, born Sithney;
* Jane Stephens, wife, married, 39, born Wendron;
* Joseph Stephens, son, 7 months, born Wendron;
* Emily Gillan, servant, unmarried, born Constantine.

In the 1861 census in Wendron, Menchley estate were:
* Bennet Stephens, head, married, 49, farmer of 50 acres, born Crowan;
* Jane Stephens, 49, born Wendron;
* John J M Stephens, son, 5, scholar, born Wendron.
