Email khiatt@craftbuilthomes.comIt Is probable that our Immigrant Ancestor, John Hiett, was the same John Hyott, Shipton-Mallet, who was taken prisoner in Somersetshire, England, 1683, as he was a member of a religious sect, The Society of Friends, known as Quakers, William Penn, also a Quaker, was instrumental and bringing many Quakers to America, and our ancestors is recorded as being in Philadelpia, Pa. 1699. By the year 1800, the Hiatts were one of the largest Quaker families in America. Rhode Island and Pennsylvania were founded and governed by men of the Quaker act originally.
The early Hiatts in America were members of the Quaker religion, but in the middle 1800s they had moved west Ohio, Indiana and Iowa, and later many of them joined the Church of Latter-day Saints ( Mormon ), and many of their descendants in Utah, California, etc. are still members of the mormon religion. The extensive membership records of these two church groups account in many ways, for the accurate geneology of the Hiatts.
This family belongs to a religious societyof friends (Quakers) in England, possibly fleeing, as many of the sec did,to Holland or France to escape persecution the latter part of the 17th century, before coming to America.
