Johannas (John) GARN

(History & Biographical Profiles of the Garn Family & Some of its Branches)
By Philip G. Garn; 1898 ( 3 volumes with index)
(Vol. 1;pp.45-47)

The earliest known Garn ancestor, Johnannes Garn was born March 21 1738 in Europe. Records indicate that his name was anglicized by English scribes to John Garn
John Garn Sr. boarded the ship "Chance" in Rotterdam. The ship called at Cowes on the Isle of Wight, then crossed the Atlantic Ocean, sailed up the Delaware River, and docked at Philadelphia, where Johannes was administered the Oath of Allegiance, as was required of foreigners, on Nov. 1 1763.
On June 21, 1767 he married Margaret Lein in the German Reformed Church, Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The Garns then located in Frederick County, Maryland. Records show that between 1773 and 1778 three of their four children were christened in the local Reformed and Luthern Churches of Frederick County, Maryland. they next appeared in Bedford county, Pa., where on June 7 1796 they purchased land. On Oct ober 26, 1803 John Garn and his wife Margaret, sold 4 acres and 15 perches of land to John Stoneking for $40.00. John continued to reside in the northern part of Bedford county until he died on September 24 1808. Although John died interstate, he had divided his land equally between his two sons, John Jr. and Frederick prior to his death. the sons legally settled this interstate inheritance by making token payments to each of their siblings in return for quit claim deeds whixh prevented them from contesting the land inheritance.
