Bill served as a drummer boy in the Civil war. His body was interred in the National Cemetery at the Old Soldiers' Home, Leavenworth, kansas.

William Leopold Gustav SCHAEFFER

William Leopold Gustav Schaeffer was born on May 15, 1857. He eloped with Miss Cecelia Abel to Union, Missouri, where they were married. Cecelia was the daughter of Rudolph and Frances Abel, farmers of Warrenton, Missouri. The fathers of the bride and groom were first cousins. At first the Schaeffers lived on a farm at Cuba, Missouri, then moved to St. Louis, where William became a police sergeant. He was 6'4" tall and weighed 280 lbs, - the biggest man on the police force - and was affectionately know as "Big Bill" by the men on his force.
The Schaeffers had five children, the last two were twin girls but Flora lived only a short time. Clara was nicknamed "Toots"
