Hans Peter emigrated to the United States and settled on a sheep ranch in Hanna, Wyoming. At one time he was reported to be quite wealthy. at the age of about 50, he married Miss Emma Schoen of Elk Mountain, Wyoming, who was some years his junior. They had three daughters, one dying in infancy. The other two daughters, Anna and Frances, reside in Denver, Colorado. Peter died at the age of 90 at Elk Mountain, where the family was making their home at the time.
The Schaeffers resided in Germany. The family was wealthy and socially prominent. carl was a gentleman farmer, and during the Napoleonic Wars served as Captain under General Blucher at the Battle of Waterloo.
Carl was Lutheran and Julia was Catholic. Their six children were all brought up in the faith of their father.

By the time the children reached maturity, the family fortune had dwindled somewhat so Leopold emigrated to the United States. Although Gustav, a professional soldier, came to the United States and served in the Federal Army during the Civil War, he returned to Germany to live. The other children all remained in Germany.
