NOTES:
He was a private and Cpl. in the GAR. It is said, he was a nervous wreck when he came out of the war, also he taught himself to read and write when he was grown. He was wounded when a piece of ear was shot off in the service plus he was on a long forced march which gave him extreme hemorroids for which he received a small pension there after and was bothered by them the rest of his life. His mother, Elizabeth (Tillson) Hiatt was known as a doctor and treated him for the hemorroids thinceforth. He and wife lifed in a sod house on the prairie in Garnet, Kansas. We know this as they got married after he got out of the War and he went in the KS regiment. They dug down in soil and built with soil (mud) blocks, then used branches and straw and ______ to hold the roof together. They used boards, small logs or wahtever they could find across the ceiling with muslin cloth to keep the loose soil from dropping on them. One time Malinda looked up and there was a great big snake crawling across the ceiling stuff. (This is the way some people did, not necessarily the way Wm. F. did (MEO)
Was in Iowa 1866, left IN for Bourbon, CO., KS 1868. Was a breeder of thoroughbred Durham cattle, Norman Horses and was a farmer. This is from Hiatt book, page 494.

June 22, 1883, Mr. W. F. Hiatt, Mornoe townsipo, conceived the idea of raising silk worms, some time last spring. So early in May he procured 20,000 silk worm eggs of a house in NY, and which shortly after hatched out as many silk worms. the worms are fed on Osage Orange hedge leaves for several weeks, until they pass thourhg five changes,, afer which they spin teh silk. Mr. Hiatt has two varieties, one kidn spinning a white cocoon, the other a bright yellow. His worms will produce about 40 lbs. of cocoons, which are worht about one dollar p[er pound. The eggs cost $2.50, and the labor required is the pickiing of some three bushels of hedte elavds each day for feed. The net earnigns of the worms can be estimated at about $18 per month. Any woman can, with the aid of a small boy, feed and care for 100,000 worms, whcih would rpocdcue about a hundred lbs. of silk every month or six weeks. First of all, a suitable buidilgn shoudl be provided. Silk can only be produced during the months that feed can be procured. The favorite feed is Mulberry, but of late, Osage Orange ha proven useful.NOTE: Faith has in her book that he came to "The Burn" in 1886! Info can be read in "Histoy of Kansas" by Andrews 1883, pg 1092.

I forgot. Caleb is not my line, just a cousin.
My line is g-g grand Nathan Hiatt that married Elizabeth Tillson. One of their sons and a daughter married a daughter and son of the Rev. Henry G. and Mary Ann (Gardner) Orwig family.
Elizabeth (Tillson) Hiatt is buried in the Judy Cemetery in Garnett, Anderson, KS. Her huband and the Orwig Parents are buried in Columbia county, OR.
My cousins Don & Betty Nees and I have been working on a book of these two families for some long time. New stuff keeps showing up so we have to fit it in.
I will, I will try to put something together for you real soon. From: LarryAndy@aol.comTo: millieoc@comcast.netSent: Tuesday, January 8, 2013 1:24:05 PM
Thanks again for all you have sent yesterday and today.
Most of my info and documentation on Caleb Hiatt is in a big 4-5"book, with parts of each family still not finished or doc. Just about the time I am sure it is complete new stuff turns up.
Like Caleb Hiatt's daughter, Eliza Jane. It took 5 years to find all her husbands and kids and get it documented by going up and down the I-5 Hwy to different counties and towns looking for her and then just last year I found her on the side of her younger sister's first husbands tombstone and checked it out to make sure it was the right person. Eliza Jane was was married to Mr. Miller and had her daughter. I bleieve he died. Then she married a Mr. U;Ren who was already married and she took her maiden name back for her and her 2nd child, James Malhure Hiatt. The court may have insisted she do this I was told. This is the child that Caleb and Rebecca Hiatt adopted. I still can't find any court records or info any where for Mr. U'ren although the name is found in OR, just not the right person, place or age. I have been down to the Oregon Archives many times. They know my face down there and help out all they can.
Now that Christmas is over I plan to get back into my genalogy, but it is hard as I have 21 great-grand kids and 3 more on the way and found out I have another step great too, so that makes 25 or something like that. I try to take pix anytime I am around any of them just to watch them grow.
I will see what I can do about Caleb's family and send it off to you. I think of you as being the "Father" of the whole Hiatt clan in my mind.

Yes, Jeannette Bardi is a close cousin I just met last year, here and we both go to the same evening meeting. We have a mutual 97 year old cousin Faith Reynolds who is the oldest living downline from Wm. Frank Hiatt and Malinda Orwig his wife. They were married on her 16 birthday as her dad, Rev. Henry G. Orwig would not allow it sooner. Jeannette, Faith and I are all downline from them, well Wm. Frank for the ladies and myself from his sister MaryM Hiatt Orwig. I have attached a word doc. in landscape. to read it right, make your page with the smallest borders you can. I don't know if it will come out right as I made it in Word Perfect, last rev. a couple years ago. Hope you can read it.
I tried to look at it, but I have old versions of everything.

From: LarryAndy@aol.comTo: millieoc@comcast.netSent: Tuesday, January 8, 2013 7:18:21 PMA chart was sent which details the relationships to John Hiatt wife Mary SMITH, the genealogy file will show this very well.
There is more information in the Hiatt Book by Wm. Perry Johnson, except about Caleb Hiatt and his family. The first 3 brothers came/born in PA, then went to VA. Many of their grandchildren were born and married in NC. Enos went to IA maybe by way of OH & IN. Three of Enos brothers, William, Isaac, Jr., and John all took their families to IN, maybe by way of OH where several were married. The last row are all first cousins, but there are more siblings not listed. In every generation at least two siblings or cousins married siblings of another close family. In most generations at least one couple had twins. Jesse started the Delicious Apple. Altogether Isaac and Martha Hiatt had over 49 known Grandchildren all first cousins
