Emma Lee STEPP

Letter written to William (Bill) Lemo DaVee from E. Lee Gray, Bellflower, California Dated May 19, 1991
Emma Stepp is the grand daughter of Levi Ryburn
Dear Bill,
Thank you for the "print out" It is very informative. As for the spelling of "DaVee". I always use that spelling  as my mother told me it was the original and right spelling of the name. She also said it was French and should be spelled that way. She didn't tell me very much about her father, Levi, only what I have already told you, However, I did not know Thomas, Levi's brother was also in Norman. As my mother was so very young, some things were evidently forgotten or seemed unimportant. I wonder how much she remembered from her experiences and how much of it was told to her later by my grandmother. The one thing she did tell me that she remembered was: The Indians would take their sick babies to my grandmother to treat them. She was a practical nurse and had the respect of the Indians because she could (and would) help them. I don't know how she turned against gambling and card playing. Perhaps it was after she thought Levi had been killed. All of it leaves questions in my mind. Come to think of it--Mother did say that my grandmother didn't talk much about my grandfather. Perhaps she tried to forget the past. Excuse my handwriting--  I'm having trouble with my hand and wrist--the well-known Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and my have to have surgery ( both L. and R.). Sorry I haven't been able to help with any more details, Best wishes,
(Emma) Lee Gray
