Gilbert was a Blue Lodge Mason. He was raised in Noble, Illinois. While in grade school, Gilbert adopted the surname of HUNT. He was never legally adopted by his mother Nora Susan or A.C. Hunt. Soon after moving from Noble to Van Texas he became affiliated with the Colfax Masonic Lodge. He received his 50 year membership certificate in November 1995. His son, Robert Earl, was in Lodge with his dad that evening, and was very proud of him. Gilbert was actually too ill to be there, but wanted his 50 year pin more than anything.
Gilbert worked for the Pure Oil Company. He began working at Oilton, Oklahoma in 1927. He was transfered to Drumbright, Oklahoma, and then transfered to Noble, Illinois with the Pure Oil Company. Gilbert and his family moved to Van Texas, january 1946. He retired in 1966 from a back injury.
Gilbert was a man of many talents. He was a self taught "Jack of all Trades". Gilbert could work with anything metal or wood, and built many things that was self inventions. However, his inventions never went beyond his families use.
Gilbert became very ill the last weeks of July 1996, and was transfered from his home to the Van Health Care Center to receive around the clock care. He became increasingly ill and on the night of August 7., I received a call that he must be taken to the hospital. Gilbert was never conscious at the hospital. I remained in his room all day August 8, and he passed away that evening at 5:45 P.M.
