Herman Eugene Ammann Sr., was born near Ulm Germany on August 4, 1828 and left for America on August 1, 1846. He made application for citizenship on October 4 1850 and received them on October 4 1860 at Bellevue, Iowa on November 21 1859. Cecelia (Beeler) Ammann was born January 18 1840 near Bellevue, Iowa. They had ten children, eight sons and two daughters.
Herman Ammann Sr., and his eldest son, Joseph, came to Kansas and got a home ready for the family on the homestead - S.E. 1/4, Section 26, Township 32, 3 West, Sumner County, Kansas. The family moved to this home on May 5, 1877. A town (really just a post office) named Orie, Kansas, was established nearby. The Post Office was located where the Chisholm Trail crossed West one/half mile East of the Ammann homestead. All of the children in the vicinity attended school at the Union School House located one mile East of the Ammann Homestead.
After giving birth to ten children and losing four in death while quite young, Cecelia (Beeler) Ammann became affected with tuberculosis and finally went to live with her daughter Theresa (Ammann) Anderson where she finally died near Mayfield Kansas on April 9 1903. Herman Ammann Sr. lived with his various sons, however, he died at the home of Henry Ammann on July 27 1910. They are both buried in the United Presbyterian Cemetery located 2 miles West, 3 miles South and 1/2 mile East of Mayfield Kansas, very near to their homestead.
